Dave McKean is a busy, busy man. He has worked as an illustrator, photographer, comic book artist, graphic designer, filmmaker and musician. Best known for his collaborative work with Neil Gaiman (Violent Cases, Black Orchid) and his directorial debut MirrorMask, McKean's art is often inspired by dream imagery and the traces of memory left by life's most stirring events. McKean recently compiled a collection of his short films and put them out on DVD under the title Keanoshow. We will be looking at several films from this collection, including The Week Before, a look at the time God spent with the Devil before he got around to creating humans; N, a tale of ghosts and lost love; and Whack!, a live action retelling of the Punch and Judy show complete with senseless violence and rude behavior.

Our first meeting will feature a collection of the short films of the Dadaists, Surrealists, & Constructivists involved in early cinema. While better known as painters and photographers, these artists helped establish cinema as an art every bit the equal of the traditional forms of painting, sculpture, literature, and stage. See cinema as it first began before moving on to see what it currently is.
